Happy St.Patrick's Day
☘️ 🍀 ☘️
The Chicago River green dyeing is a beloved tradition that takes place every year on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day. The event typically starts at 10 a.m., and the best spot to watch is along the Chicago River between State and Columbus.
The tradition began in 1962, when a local plumbers' union proposed dyeing the river green as part of the city's St. Patrick's Day celebration. The initial purpose of dyeing the river was actually to trace the sources of industrial pollution, but it quickly became a cherished tradition.
About 40 to 50 pounds of plant-based, biodegradable dye is used to turn the river green, which is carefully dispersed from boats and mixed into the water by hand. The dyeing process takes around 45 minutes to an hour, and the brilliant green color can last for several days.
The Chicago River green dyeing is not only a visual treat, but also a significant cultural and economic event attracting tourists from around the world and contributing to the city's economy.
